Lazy Sunday Afternoon

After spending the better part of Saturday organizing my husband’s office with him and attempting step 1 of a 12-step organizational plan for the small people’s toys designed to keep the crazy in me at bay a little longer, we were wiped. So on Sunday, finally coming to terms with the fact that it’s so not in the 90s anymore, we decided to hit the beach that afternoon and brave the frigid temperatures that hovered in the 70s.

Somehow, the idea of a picnic came up, and my younger son was insistent that we  throw one together, despite the fact that we didn’t have much of what I would consider traditional picnic fare. So instead, we basically dumped a bunch of pretzels, granola bars, fruit snacks, juice bags and water bottles in the picnic basket and headed out.

The water felt good, but there was a bit of a breeze coming in off the ocean, which kept us from going more than knee deep in the water.

My daughter was determined to eat immediately, right on the beach,

but my younger son was equally determined to eat our picnic at a picnic table, so we compromised by allowing one small snack on the beach first, and then eating the remainder at the table afterward.

When we got to the wooded picnic area and spread out our snacks, my younger son suddenly jumped up excitedly, pointed at a nearby grill, and said, “Wow, that’s almost like a grill,” and ran over to check it out.

He’s most astute.

He circled around it once, as if marking his territory, and then proclaimed it an actual, real live grill.

“Let’s grill something!” he decided, which would have been a great idea, except for small points like the fact that I’m guessing pretzels and fruit snacks don’t grill especially well, and the fact that we don’t carry a bag of charcoal around in our trunk, I’m sorry to say.

So we dined instead on room-temperature, pre-packaged snacks and supped on spring water and called ourselves kings of the unplanned family picnic.

All in all, not a bad way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon.

  1. It surprises me that it’s not warmer in the Carolinas…, it’s been quite warm up here until Mo that is (today). The shot of your little girl sitting on the beach is adorable!

    1. Interesting. Lately, I haven’t paid much attention to the weather other than what I can obviously see and feel near my home. They are predicting high 70s for the next few days, so it should be slightly warmer than over the weekend.

Thanks. I’m convinced 4-year-old girls look cute wearing and doing almost anything. Wish there was a pill for that for those of us slightly older than 4. 🙂

  2. Impromptu picnics are the best! Phew! I’ve been so far behind on my blog reading that I can’t believe I haven’t read your “voice” in a few weeks. I’m glad to “hear” it again.
